Be a “Martha” in the Kitchen!

June 4, 2009 by Debbie Taylor

Martha Stewart is regarded as an expert about almost all things Home & Garden.  She can whip out a wedding cake, make perfect petit fours, plant beautiful flowers, make a meal for 20 in less than 30 minutes, and has the perfect solution for every woman who ever needed anything for any home.

Right?

Have you ever wanted -- just once -- to really make the most magnificent meal for someone -- your spouse, a group of really dear friends, new neighbors, new in-laws -- and you wanted it to JUST BE PERFECT?

How do you think she pulls it off?

  • She has a PLAN.  She makes lists.  She knows where things are.  She follows her plan and makes it happen!  She plans her meals, her grocery shopping, her coupons -- and she uses them to her best ability. And look at all these PLANNING resources on her website!
  • She practices.  There is NO way she did everything perfectly upon her first attempt.  Oh sure, she has assistants -- but in the end, we only see MARTHA in front of the camera and on Oprah and wherever she may be.  And she makes it look GOOD.  She knows her tools and her capabilities and she works hard to hone her skills.
  • She uses Valuable Resources.  Now, for all her ability and skill (okay, and bank account), I don’t believe Martha is the FIRST person in the world to have discovered how to fold a napkin 27 ways!  Do you?  Of course not!  Napkin folding was popular in 1923.  What Martha does is study, learn, and make it practical for her.  Then she shares it with others.
  • She plays.  She has fun in her kitchen.  She enjoys being in her kitchen.  She makes really appetizing goodies and beautiful treats for the eyes.  Not everything is serious and perfect all the time.  Really -- I promise -- just see the next point!
  • She Learns from Her Mistakes.  Now, I’ll bet you didn’t know she made mistakes.  I mean, besides the Insider Trading thing...  It’s like when my mom tried to make Pound Cake and ended up having to convert it to PoundCake Pie!  Roll with the punches and laugh your way through it!

So -- if you feel a little inept in the kitchen -- like you WISH you could be like Martha Stewart in the kitchen -- and oh how I would LOVE to borrow her assistants for a few years days -- try these ideas and see how they work for you.

How do YOU think Martha Stewart pulls it off?  Is there anything you wish you could DO like Martha?

  • Have you ever seen the show her daughter did making fun of Martha? I can't remember what it is called or if it is still on the air. I watched it once and it was so funny. She points out how imperfect her mom really is!
  • The video was one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. She's hilarious! I love Conan on the horse and the melons...I guess I need to take her advice and lighten up about cooking. Practice makes perfect. Not even Martha is perfect.
