CBC Jill: The Veggie Queen

June 18, 2009 by Debbie Taylor

This is a fun project for me, because yet again, I have the opportunity to talk with another Foodie who happens to be vegetarian!  In this Cross Blog Conversation, I will start by asking Jill,  The Veggie Queen, a couple of questions and she will respond with the answers on her blog.  Then she will ask me a question and I will get to answer it here!   We get to continue our conversation for several posts and hopefully provide some information to you as we go!

Considering the previous interviews with foodie moms who were vegetarians, my personal interest in vegetarian eating is really peaked!  My husband and I grew up on meat & potatoes and typical “Midwestern” fare.  My husband and I have always dealt with health issues and weight problems, but with two little girls we have significant reason to eat well and take care of ourselves.

Jill, how would you suggest a typical, steak-loving, non-vegetarian transition to a more healthful way of eating, whether or not they eat a strictly vegetarian diet?

Thankfully my husband is pretty open to vegetarian eating, but I have little experience preparing vegetarian recipes outside of salad (to which we always add cheese…What cookbooks or resources have you found to be helpful to you in your eating and preparation of food?  When attending family or other potluck style get togethers where meat is often served, how do you introduce something enticing and satisfying to the menu?

Okay readers, here’s where the fun starts!  Jill will answer my questions at her blog, and will in return ask me questions which I’ll respond to here later.  Be sure to check back soon!

  • Alright! Another vegetarian. Woo hoo! For my husband, who's not a veggie, I just make things that are usually meat based without meat, but can still be just as filling and hearty. With really good tasting fake ground beef on the market, he says he can't tell the difference when it's in a dish like lasagna or chili.
  • I too look forward to Jill's answer. I think our meaty menu here at our house is wrecking our waistlines...
  • I look forward to hearing the answer to this at Jill's website! Great questions Debbie!
