Picky Eaters, Are There Really Suggestions?
October 7, 2009 by Stacie Lewin
I have two boys that really picky eaters. It’s really hard to get my oldest to try something new. My youngest doesn’t like certain textures and only like a few certain things. My daughter on the other hand will eat anything and everything so far.
A child’s nutrition doesn’t have to be frustrating. There are strategies out there to avoid those power struggles to help a picky eater eat a balanced diet.
- Don’t force a meal or snack! A child will eat when they are hungry.
- Have meals and snacks at the same time everyday. Don’t have juice, milk, or snacks one hour before eating. By doing so your child may come to the table more hungry and be encouraged to eat more.
- Be patient when trying new foods. Try talking about the shape, color, texture, or aroma. Don’t say whether it tastes good or not. Try introducing the foods more then once.
- Make it fun. For example have fresh veggies with a dip. Cut foods in different shapes.
- Have your child help. For example have your child help select fruit at the grocery store. Encourage your child to help you rinse the fruit.
