Sunday Morning Breakfast: Ziploc Omelets

June 7, 2009 by Debbie Taylor

Okay – remember how I said My Mom Rocks!?!  Here’s another reason why I think so:

Ziploc Omelets!

My brother, Dan, and his family came over to my parents house on Saturday morning while we were visiting last weekend, and mom decided to offer us Ziploc Omelets for breakfast (along with fruit, juice, coffee, and pecan rolls, of course!)

If you ever need to cook breakfast or brunch for a crowd, this is an easy way to offer personalized omelets with little mess – OR – making people wait forever until its their turn to “order” their omelet.

Here’s how it works:

Depending on the number of guests, put on a pot of water and set it to boil. You can usually cook 6-8 omelets in a large pot. If you have more omelets, make another pot of boiling water.

Write your guests’ names on a Quart Size Ziploc Freezer Bag with a permanent marker.

Crack 2 eggs into the quart size Ziploc bag (not more than 3).img_1080

Shake or squeeze by hand (gently) to mash them to your desired consistency.  My sister-in-law is very particular about her eggs and mashed hers for several minutes.  My brother doesn’t really care, so he essentially just broke the yolks.

Now comes the fun part!

Set out bowls of a variety of ingredients such as:img_1073

Shredded Cheese
Diced Ham
Cooked bacon or sausage
Diced Onions
Chopped Green Peppers
Chopped Tomatoes
Hash Browns
Salsa
Sour Cream
Chopped Olives

Your guests can pick and choose their favorite ingredients to add to the eggs in the baggie.

Shake the bag to mix them well.  We actually kinda mixed ours around holding the baggie in one hand and squeezing with the other.

Press the excess air out of the bag and zip it up.img_10721

Put the bags into rolling, boiling water for exactly 13 minutes.img_1077

Cut the bags open – and Vóila!  The omelet rolls out right onto the plate!  No fuss – No muss – Just really yummy breakfast!!!

  • What a cool idea! I never would've thought of that. Great if you have a lot of kids, too. They would think this was fun.
  • That is so smart! I wouldn't have ever thought of this! We are having a reunion next month and are in charge of one day of meals. Maybe we will try this! Thanks!

Wow! What a Fantastic Fast and Easy meal for a crowd.
A great idea when travelling, and there's no decent pans to use.
Reckon with a bit of thought you might be able to do all sorts of 'things in bags'
    Thanks for a great idea.
  • Debbie, we made your ziploc omelets this weekend and everyone loved them! The kids got a real kick out of making them, and they came out perfectly done. Best of all, very little clean-up!!
  • Angela - that's so great to hear! We really had fun with them, too, and I think we'll probably do it again the next time my family gets together for a brunch! =)
