Time for some Country Cookin’

julian-2007Today I was thinking about our visit to Julian, California last year. When we lived in San Diego (yes I move alot), we would go there on the weekends. It’s a lovely country town with a warm welcome and nice people. Those people also make the darn best apple pie we’ve ever had!

Julian Country Coookin’

There was a time when we considered buying a cabin in Julian and the Realtor gave us the Julian Country Cookin’ book as a gift.

Julian Apple Crisp

I have only used one recipe from this book so far, and I’m thrilled to tell you it received rave reviews! The recipe is for Apple Crisp and it was contributed to the book by Mary Hall. This cute cookbook is put together by Our Lady’s Guild of Julian as a fundraiser. [Read more...]

Time for a Coffee Break

Coffee FAQge-coffeemaker_edited

I realize that coffee is brewed, not cooked, however I consider it something I can cook in the kitchen! There is measuring involved, right? I’ve been through many brands of coffee over the years and I must admit Seattle’s Best is probably my favorite daily brew.

When I buy a new coffee I’m always confused by the different advice on the packaging. Some say store the coffee in the fridge, some say store it in a cool dry place. Is there such a place in Washington State? Perhaps a simple Coffee FAQ will help answer all of our coffee questions.

Related Coffee Roasters

Believe it or not, there are coffee roasters in my genes! I recently learned that I have distant relatives (back home in Wisconsin) that own and operate Berres Brothers Coffee Roasters. I have yet to sample their coffees and I would love to hear some feedback if you have already done so.

All Brains, No Braun

In addition to drinking coffee over the years, I have also worn out many coffeemakers as well. The one that lasted the longest was a Braun, however recently when I purchased a Braun it was pretty obvious to me that the quality was no longer the same. As I poured the water in I couldn’t see it rising in the panel, I thought that was strange and wondered where the water could be going, until I felt it on my feet! The coffeemaker was delivered to me with a hole in the bottom of the water tank! Thanks guys! [Read more...]

Crocks Rock!

Well, crockpots that is! To most people the crockpot represents time saved in the kitchen. For me, the crockpot represents less dishes to wash! Probably the only downside to the meal being cooked in the crockpot is for the homebased business mom, like myself, having to smell the delicious aroma of dinner cooking throughout the day.

This is our crockpot, one of two that we use; this one is the largest size we could find, made by Rival. You can easily cook for a 4-6 person family from our experience, it works great! [Read more...]

A Little Bit About Me…

I believe my trepidations about cooking actually stem from when I was a teenager. My mom only invited two teenagers into her kitchen to help prepare dinner for the ten of us each night, or supper as we called it then (we’re from Wisconsin). [Read more...]
