Birthday Celebration Traditions

happy-birthday

For some people, birthdays bring grim reminders of waning youth and graying hair.

Pshaw!!!  Not me!

Birthdays are the best day to celebrate!!!  Saturday is my baby brother’s birthday.  He’ll be 31.  (Happy Birthday, Dave!)

I remember the day he was born when my dad came racing across the parking lot at school in our old blue suburban, and seeing him through the nursery window for the first time – all red and full of dark hair.  What a cutie he was! (Sorry folks – no pics – saving them for his 40th!)

Something our mom always did was really help us celebrate our birthdays!  We always knew we would have a special day and special ways to celebrate the anniversary of our birth!

I was born in December, so sometimes my birthday gifts were “combined” with Christmas presents (bummer deal!)  However, as I got older, I grew to enjoy my birthdays because of the festive season.  The twinkling lights.  The festive moods.  The happy caroling.  And my birthday was right in there in the middle!

Now, our mom always told us the story of when we were born.   That was always special to her, and I’m doing this with my own girls.  Celebrating those special moments and treasured memories with them, even at their young age.

And she would always fix – no exceptions – whatever we requested for dinner.  We always got to eat our favorite meal for our birthday.  I can remember the year I requested Barbecue Ribs.  It was the only time she tried to persuade me to pick something different – my dad does NOT like Barbecue – but when I would not change my mind, she made the best Barbecue Ribs and it was special to me.

She also made our favorite cake.  We preferred a couple of cakes my mom made to any store bought cake, so we were always happy when she’d bring out our cake – candles aflame – singing “Happy Birthday” because we knew she made it just for our special day.

These traditions of ours were not elaborate.  They didn’t require a lot of money.  But they made both of my younger brothers and I remember our birthdays with great fondness and enjoyment.

I’ll be turning 40 this year and like almost every other year, I am looking forward to my birthday!

It’s the celebration of the day that I was born!

I love birthdays too. It’s a bigger deal to my husband than it is to me though.

This is too weird of a “coinkidank”. I also have a brother, David and his birthday is today.

So Debbie, are you a Christmas baby?

  2. Debbie says:

Whoa! I am not a Christmas baby (thankfully) – just born in December, thereby automatically falling into that category. =) So, I just decided to GO WITH IT and absorb the spirit of the season as part of my celebration. lol…

What a mom! We let our children choose to but most of the time they want to go out to eat! My daughter has a birthday close to christmas too.

  4. Pam says:

Before I had kids I demanded a birthday month. I love celebrating my birthdays and everyone elses too!

  5. Pam says:

Oh yeah, my youngest, Jack was almost born on my birthday, but I really wanted him to have his own day. I swear I held him in by sheer force of will, but mine is July 9th & his is July 11th!
