This week’s Buzz a Mom is Danielle Smith, a.k.a. Extraordinary Mommy. Danielle has a pretty full schedule and I was curious to find out how she manages food & meal preparation for her family, and how she handles herself in the kitchen!
FF: So how would you rank yourself in the kitchen: a pro, an amateur, or a guest?
Danielle: I’m halfway between a pro and an amateur! I am not winning any awards – I can’t move around the kitchen like Giada or Rachel Ray – but I can put together some great meals (and desserts!!) for my family. I cook at least 5 nights a week and those are typically ‘from scratch’ type of meals – I try to avoid the boxed/packaged meals. They may be easy, but they just aren’t nutritious!
FF: What do you enjoy – if anything – about cooking, baking, food prep, being in the kitchen, etc.?
Danielle: Actually, I love all of it. I’m a sensory person – so the smells – the garlic, onion, bread baking, the vanilla, the cinnamon – all heavenly. Of course, the tasting is always a must!. I tend to nibble while I cook. Correction – I do NOT love the cleaning up portion of the program.
FF: Do you like to collect & share recipes? What are the kinds of things your family likes to eat?
Danielle: I do love to collect new recipes – I cut them out of coupons, find them online, search through books and ask friends for new recipes. My small people are a bit picky – though getting better. At least 2 nights a week, we do ‘kid’s choice’ – which typically means quesadillas, grilled cheese, pasta or soup. However, they do (on non-kid’s choice nights) have to try at least a bite of everything I make for the family. Early on, they learned the phrase, “Mommy is not a short-order cook.” Every week we mix it up – chicken, pork chops, pasta, fish – whatever sounds good that day.
Danielle is a wife and Mommy to two sweet and sassy small people. In her ‘free time’, she balances work as the founder and primary author of ExtraordinaryMommy.com as well as hosting The Spin Cycle on MomTV.com (Wednesdays, 9 pm EST) – a show that keeps you current and helps you to balance your world as it spins around you. She also co-hosts Why Moms Matter on Blog Talk Radio and is the Inspiration Channel Editor for MomItForward.com

I love the ideas of kids choice, letting them have a say in the meals.

I too love the “kid’s choice” idea! I’m going to “borrow” it! Thanks for the great interview!

Amen to “Mommy is not a short-order cook!” Everyone gets the same thing around here. That being said, I try to have at least 1 thing I know everyone will eat.
