This is part of our new ‘Buzz a Mom‘ project at Mom’s Talk Network.

As a little girl, one my favorite things was to visit my Great-Grandma Woolem. Why? Well, Great Grandma showered us with her love through her food. I can remember helping her make biscuits (from scratch y’all) for breakfast and covering everything (myself, the table, the FLOOR) with flour. That mess was of no consequence to her! What mattered was that I was having fun and she was spending time with me.

Likewise, many of you have special childhood memories that revolve around the kitchen. This week, I interviewed Mary Lutz of ProVBS about her own special memories and here is what she had to share.

Q: Do you have any particular memories from your childhood that are connected to time spent in the kitchen?

A: Gosh, I have lots of memories from my childhood in the kitchen. I grew up in New Mexico and Mom used to make great Mexican dishes like enchiladas, tacos and burritos! We lived with my Grandpa, so we’d cook for him. One of his favorite meals was roast and potatoes and I remember he used to always eat a piece of bread with butter and jelly with just about every meal. I do that now myself; it’s almost like the meal isn’t complete without it. My kids think I’m weird…LOL.

Q: What kitchen aromas ignite that nostalgia for you?

A: We had a gas stove and so do I and just the smell of the oven warming up often reminds me of my childhood and Grandpa’s house. Another aroma that reminds me of my childhood is the smell of warming tortillas on the gas burner!

Q: How important do you feel family meal time is in creating memories that last a lifetime?

A: I think family meal time is one of the most important things you can do as a family! Although we may not sit down at the table every single night of the week, we do make meals as a family and enjoy them together, either at the bar or in the living room with TV trays. I just heard a statistic on the radio that families who have at least 4 meals a week together, the children are more likely to succeed. That really shows the importance of eating meals as a family!

Q: How do you create kitchen memories with your own family today?

A: Being that I have a daughter who is 16, I’m teaching her to cook…some. She just realized how easy broccoli is to make…LOL. We do other traditional things like baking cookies at Christmas, coloring Easter Eggs, making the traditional Thanksgiving meal and grilling out in the summer.
