When Mom was moved into a nursing home a few years ago, my dad and my sisters carefully went through her things. I was delighted to receive Mom’s handwritten cookbook (I thought it was strange that my sisters would give me, the non-cooking daughter/sister, Mom’s precious cookbook!).
A Family Heirloom to Treasure
The cover of the book is plain, black, and worn on the edges. The pages are yellowing from age, but Mom’s handwriting is as eloquent as ever. Each recipe written with love and care for the family of eight children that she raised and cooked for; four boys, then four girls followed as if she planned that too.
Recently I opened this book, yes a big step for me, and to my astonishment (and opening it from the back end) I discovered that Mom had dutifully kept our family geneology handwritten in the back of her cookbook! I shared the news with my family and everyone was quite surprised. Thanks Mom!
I’ll share more from what I find in her cookbook in future posts…stay tuned!

What a great story. I have some handwritten recipes from my great-grandmother that I cherish.
