Today I was thinking about our visit to Julian, California last year. When we lived in San Diego (yes I move alot), we would go there on the weekends. It’s a lovely country town with a warm welcome and nice people. Those people also make the darn best apple pie we’ve ever had!
Julian Country Coookin’
There was a time when we considered buying a cabin in Julian and the Realtor gave us the Julian Country Cookin’ book as a gift.
Julian Apple Crisp
I have only used one recipe from this book so far, and I’m thrilled to tell you it received rave reviews! The recipe is for Apple Crisp and it was contributed to the book by Mary Hall. This cute cookbook is put together by Our Lady’s Guild of Julian as a fundraiser.
Apple Crisp
- 4 lbs. (about 1 doz.) tart apples
Pare, core and slice into a 9×13-inch pan. Mix together and add to apples:
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. allspice
Dribble on: 2 Tablespoons lemon juice
Topping: Lightly work together with a pastry blender until crumbly:
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup quick rolled oats
Spread over top and bake in preheated oven at 375 degrees for about 45 minutes or until apples are soft and top is golden and crisp.

We used to live in San Diego in the 80′s and I loved Julian! I’m so glad the CA fires didn’t destroy it. I’d wondered how Julian fared. Love your recipe too!
Joan, when we were sipping our apple cider at that corner shop we could see the scorched trees on the hills just above the town. We were so worried during the fires, just like you.
