What’s in the Pantry? What the Doctor Ordered!

At the mere mention of this particular ingredient, many doctors (and their patients) cringe.

However, without adequate levels of this, our bodies are entirely unable to sustain life!

It’s Salt!

Just like so many things in life, moderation is the key to good health when it comes to salt.

Sodium is an essential electrolyte that is absolutely necessary for the human body to survive. In conjunction with potassium, sodium helps regulate the body’s fluid levels.

Sodium chloride, commonly known as table salt, has been used for centuries.

It has been used to preserve meat, and as one of the ingredients for Egyptian mummification.

It has been used in skin care, in home remedies (ever gargled with saltwater for a sore throat?), and is even used to melt the ice off the roads during winter…

The truth is – Salt is so common that its value is underestimated.  Overuse can be toxic; underuse can be deadly.

Kinds of Salt

Beyond your regular table salt, there are many other kinds of salt available for use (this is not an exhaustive list):

So – how do you like your salt?

Did you know if you find that you’ve added too much salt to soup or stew, you can reduce the saltiness by adding 1-2 whole, peeled potatoes and allowing them to cook for about 30 minutes.  Taste the soup – and cook longer if necessary.  Remove the potatoes before serving.

Here are other great uses for salt.

Are you a Fan of Salt?

I tend not to add it often to food I’m cooking, unless a recipe calls for it.  I don’t like it on my pretzels, but love it on my popcorn…

Do you prefer your pretzels with or without salt?  What about your popcorn?

Do you find yourself adding salt to the food you eat, or do you notice it at all?

I love to use salt for homemade beauty recipes. Sea salt works best, the non-iodized kind. Use it with essential oils and a little olive oil for a great hand scrub!

As for in the kitchen, I think a little goes a long way but it is important for my cooking.

I like salt on pretzels and popcorn, and potatoes and rice, and cucumbers and corn – you get the picture. I do try to use little bits at a time so don’t worry too much. :)

I do like salt. But, strange thing, I’m pregnant and I guess I wasn’t getting enough of it as my muscles started to get weak. I upped the salt and magnesium and I’m fine now.

I also had a bag of it in my car when I lived near Boston. It does melt snow, and if you get stuck, it’s the only way to get your car out.

I like salt in moderation. My husband loves salt! Now my kids think they need salt on all there vegetables! As I am getting older I have noticed that salt is really affecting my weight!
